Applications for the ACRL Information Literacy Immersion Program Assessment and Intentional Teaching Tracks are due May 7, 2012. The Assessment and Intentional Teaching Tracks will be offered simultaneously November 14-18, 2012, in Nashville. The Immersion Program allows you to embrace your educational role by embarking on a path of teacher development and pedagogical inquiry in a community of practice for academic librarians devoted to collaborative learning, individual renewal, and instructional awesomeness.
Assessment: Demonstrating the Educational Value of the Academic Library Track – This track will approach assessment from a learning-centered perspective; participants will emerge with a broader understanding of assessment and how to use assessment as an important tool to guide evidence-based classroom, curriculum and program development.
Intentional Teaching: Reflective Teaching to Improve Student Learning Track – This track is aimed at the experienced academic librarian (5+ years teaching experience, in a library or other setting) who wants to become more self-aware and self-directed as a teacher. This program facilitates the process of critical reflection through peer discussion, readings and personal reflection as a pathway to professional growth and renewal.

I was an outlier even amongst this varied group of Federal librarians in that my position description falls under the 2210 category, “Information Technology Management” (PDF), a series that covers positions for which the paramount requirement is knowledge of IT principles, concepts, and methods (data storage, software applications, networking, etc.).
I call on the principles of librarianship and archival practice every day in my work, and I self-identify with the library and archives community, but by any standard my digital preservation work is inherently information technology.
I’m even more schizophrenic than that, however, in that I hold a Master of Science in Library Science, my official job title is “IT Project Manager,” but it says “Digital Archivist” on my business card.
I don’t speak for the others on the panel, but my gut feeling is that we all, both experienced and new, embody a new kind of Federal worker: “information professionals,” whose duties transcend individual categories and encompass information science, traditional librarianship, information technology, social media, business process management, communications and so much more.
How that shakes out in the nomenclature is TBD, but a reconsideration of what it means to be a librarian at the Federal level is an excellent first step and will certainly benefit the entire library profession.

Objets documentaires numériques : nouvel enseignement ?

Le début du XXI^e siècle consacre le règne du numérique dans la production et la circulation de l’information. Un mouvement de convergence médiatique s’amorce ainsi avec l’intégration des supports traditionnels de communication et d’information sur un même média. Avec le web 2 et ses outils laissant une large part à l’interactivité, avec la démultiplication des réseaux sociaux, de nouvelles modalités de communication apparaissent. Plus participatives, ces modalités rendent l’utilisateur acteur de la production et de la circulation de l’information réinterrogeant par là ses façons de penser, d’agir et d’être. L’interaction avec les contenus, la personnalisation des informations et leur inscription sur les réseaux, les possibilités ouvertes par les traitements numériques, obligent à reconsidérer le concept d’information aussi bien dans sa nature que dans sa granularité. L’individu lui-même, de par sa présence sur les réseaux, se voit documentarisé et devient une entité informationnelle. Le concept de document est, quant à lui, bouleversé dans son essence même. Les nouveaux outils du web 2, nés de start-up animées par la recherche de modèles économiques viables, dessinent un paysage toujours mouvant, se recomposant à l’infini et donnant à croire qu’il n’y ait point de repères stables pour les penser, ni de continuité possible au-delà des incessantes ruptures qui les caractérisent. Une redocumentarisation du monde s’opère ainsi produisant de nouveaux objets documentaires et rendant nécessaire la recherche de repères pour l’usager, qu’il soit élève ou étudiant, consommateur, professionnel ou citoyen du monde. La « culture de l’information » est ainsi faite d’un ensemble de pratiques, de représentations, d’histoire des médias et des techniques, et de connaissances variées. L’entrée dans cette culture nécessite une éducation utilisant et étudiant à la fois les objets qui sont la source de son fondement et de son questionnement. Dans ce domaine comme dans tout autre, l’école tient un rôle essentiel et la médiation pédagogique à mettre en œuvre est sans doute à reconsidérer. Bien au-delà de l’intégration des outils numériques dans les pratiques d’enseignement, l’émergence de nouveaux objets documentaires produit de nouveaux objets d’enseignement et inscrit les apprentissages informationnels dans une perspective de convergence des littératies médiatique, numérique et informationnelle. Mais peut-on proposer des repères stables et structurants dans le flux continuel des innovations technologiques, accorder le temps long de l’étude à celui, trépidant, de la modernité numérique ? Comment les professeurs documentalistes peuvent-ils contribuer à relever ce défi ?

Libraries have been creating metadata for resources for well over a century. The good news is that library metadata is rules-based and that the library cataloging community has built up a wealth of knowledge about publications, their qualities, and the users who seek them. The bad news is that library practices were fixed long before computers would be used to store and retrieve the data. Library cataloging practice continues to have elements of the era of printed catalogs and alphabetized cards, and needs to modernize to take advantage of new information technologies. This metadata, however, exists today in tens of thousands of databases and there is a large sigh heard around the world whenever a librarian considers the need to make this massive change.
As with all large problems, this one becomes more tractable when broken into smaller pieces. Karen Coyle will present her "five stars of library data," an analysis of the changes needed and some steps that libraries can begin to take immediately. She will also discuss the "open world" view of the linked data movement and how this view can increase the visibility of libraries in the global information space. This webinar will give an introduction to the types of changes that are needed as well as the value that can be realized in library services. Attendees will learn of some preparatory steps have already been taken, which should confirm that libraries have indeed begun the journey "From Here to There."

L'UNESCO propose d'organiser une conférence internationale du 26 au 28 septembre 2012 à Vancouver, Canada, afin d’explorer les principaux enjeux de la préservation du patrimoine documentaire numérique. L’objectif de cette conférence est d'élaborer des stratégies pour une plus grande protection des données numériques et définir une méthodologie de mise en œuvre appropriée aux pays en développement, en particulier.

La conférence réunira des professionnels des secteurs du patrimoine, des représentants gouvernementaux (ou décideurs politiques), des représentants de l'industrie informatique, les ayants droit et d'autres personnes clés afin d'évaluer les politiques actuelles pour proposer des recommandations pratiques qui assureront un accès permanent au patrimoine documentaire numérique.

Bien qu’aujourd'hui le savoir soit partout créé et rendu accessible en format numérique, il risque de disparaître et sa perte pourrait entraîner l'appauvrissement de l'humanité. Malgré l'adoption de la Charte de l'UNESCO sur la préservation du patrimoine numérique en 2003, les risques de disparition du patrimoine numérique restent encore méconnus.

En tant que produit culturel et source de connaissance, l'information numérique possède une valeur économique. Elle joue un rôle majeur dans le développement durable national, et de plus en plus de données personnelles, gouvernementales et commerciales sont créées uniquement en format numérique. Mais des biens nationaux numérisés constituent aussi une immense richesse des pays concernés et de la société au sens large. La disparition de ce patrimoine aura des conséquences économiques et culturelles qui peuvent également entraver l'avancement des connaissances.

Des obstacles d’ordre juridiques, technologiques, sociaux, financiers et/ou politiques doivent être surmontés afin d’assurer la pérennité des contenus numériques. Aussi la conférence aura pour objectif :

le lancement d'initiatives spécifiques liées à la préservation numérique et à la promotion de l'accès au patrimoine documentaire grâce à la numérisation ;
la mise à jour ou la révision de la Charte de l'UNESCO sur la préservation du patrimoine numérique ;
l'identification des cadres juridiques qui faciliterait à long terme la conservation numérique ;
l'accord sur la promotion et le développement de normes et standards d'échange entre les institutions ;
la définition des rôles respectifs des professions, des universitaires, l'industrie et les gouvernements pour résoudre les problèmes divers et d'un modèle pour leur coopération.

A FCCN – Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional irá promover nos próximos dias 7, 8 e 9 de Fevereiro, na Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Santarém, as suas Jornadas anuais.
No programa das Jornadas FCCN, destacam-se a realização de reuniões de trabalho dedicadas aos projetos RCAAP – Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal e B-ON – Biblioteca do Conhecimento Online. The Library of Congress is now accepting applications for its 2012 Teaching with Primary Sources Teacher Institutes in Washington, D.C. The free, five-day institute will provide educators with the tools and resources to effectively integrate primary sources into classroom teaching.

Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney has donated a collection of his literary papers to the National Library of Ireland.

The world famous poet's collection, worth tens of thousands of pounds and regarded as a treasure trove by scholars, was handed over at a reception in Dublin on Wednesday.

The fascinating literary archive, regarded as the working papers of one of Ireland's greatest living writers, has been welcomed as an extraordinary addition to the National Library's treasures.

At its heart are the manuscripts of his poetry, a comprehensive and vast collection of loose-leaf, typescript and manuscript worksheets and bound notebooks.

The collection spans Dr Heaney's literary career, from the publication of his first major collection, Death of a Naturalist (1966), to volumes such as Wintering Out (1972) and North (1975), right through to Station Island (1984), Seeing Things (1991) and his most recent publications, District and Circle (2006) and Human Chain (2010).

The Wellcome Library has received JISC funding towards the creation of a major free online dataset covering public health in London from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century.

This project is based on the reports of the Medical Officers of Health (MOH) in Greater London between 1848 and 1972. Of all the collections in the Wellcome Library the MOH reports have the greatest research potential for the study of public health history in 19th and 20th century Britain, and are one of the most heavily consulted collections at the Wellcome Library. Online access to this resource will vastly increase their impact on research and would be invaluable to public health researchers, epidemiologists and practitioners, as well as medical and social historians.

All research papers must be written in English and follow the formatting guidelines of Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS).

All papers will be reviewed by at least 3 members of the programme committee. Paper acceptance can be as long paper, short paper or poster. The size of the poster should not exceed ISO A0 (portrait) size – maximum height of 1189mm (46.81 inches) and maximum width of 841mm (33.11 inches).

This is an ambitious project that I announced recently as one of several priorities and special projects the Copyright Office is undertaking. To date nearly 13 million index cards from our card catalog and over half of the 660 volume Catalog of Copyright Entries have been scanned, and the images have been processed through quality assurance and moved to long-term managed storage.
So, back to the earlier question: How do we go about creating a searchable database comprised of 70 million digital objects? For that matter, how do we create metadata for such a large volume of records? Assuming we would like to achieve full-level indexing, how do we do so on a rudimentary indexing budget? What technologies and creative approaches can we profitably employ to get this work done? We welcome your ideas and suggestions on these and many other questions related to this project.
The Copyright Office historical catalog serves as the mint record of American creativity, and there are great benefits to making the collection accessible online. The World Intellectual Property Organization's Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights has released the Draft Compilation on Limitations and Exceptions for Libraries and Archives. The Draft Compilation is an extensive document, which the library delegation warmly welcomed. Its 45 pages contain comments and proposals by Member States on each of the 10 clusters of limitations and exceptions for libraries and archives. It is extremely encouraging that Ecuador has now tabled additional language for each cluster that mirrors the proposals contained in IFLA's TLIB 4.1 document. Consequently, IFLA believes the Draft Compilation is an extremely valuable document going forward

As mudanças que são inscritas na sociedade do século XXI são representadas nas formas de registros, nos mecanismos de negócios, na estruturação dos relacionamentos sociais, entre tantos aspectos da vida em sociedade deste novo século. Estas mudanças são refletidas nos arquivos em todas as suas fases e exigem das instituições arquivísticas uma adaptação ou mesmo uma reconstrução do modo de compreender, representar, preservar e dar acesso aos acervos. Este processo levou ainda no final do século XX e no inicio do novo século a comunidade de pesquisadores e profissionais a revisitarem os fundamentos teóricos e as boas práticas em busca de respostas para uma sociedade plural. No XVII Congresso Brasileiro de Arquivologia pretendemos que a partir dos eixos temáticos propostos a comunidade de pesquisadores e profissionais que atuam no campo arquivistico possam analisar as principais questões considerando o papel central das instituições arquivisticas no Brasil e no mundo.

The ACRL Research Coordinating Committee is sponsoring a new forum to give those doing research in academic library contexts an opportunity to share their work with a national audience at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference June 21-26, 2012, in Anaheim. The ACRL Research Forum will feature three research presentations based on work in progress or completed, followed by discussion

At the 2012 ALA Midwinter Meeting, the ACRL Research Coordinating Committee will conduct a blind review to select a maximum of 3 papers. Review criteria include: significance of the study for academic libraries/librarians; quality and creativity of the methodology; and potential to fill gaps or build on previous research in academic libraries/librarianship, particularly with respect to the ACRL Plan for Excellence goals. The world economy in which we are living poses challenges that lead to a realization that 'more of the same' will be difficult to sustain. This provides an illustration that, in order to create new or modified knowledge practices, strengthen customer relationships and thus positively influence customer satisfaction, organizations must be flexible in configuring (combining) knowledge and knowledge structures in a way that is appropriate for delivering value to the customer. It must simultaneously develop effective strategies for updating the knowledge of its staff members necessary for underpinning the creation and delivery of appropriate knowledge services. Thus, unlearning (forgetting) becomes a critical means for organizational success. The ECKM community of scholars has already initiated dialogue that links its particular strengths to innovation issues. This conference aims to further that dialogue by attracting leading edge work that leverages the ECKM community's in-depth understanding of learning and unlearning to better understand knowledge management. Our aim is to stimulate breakthrough research streams linking learning, unlearning and knowledge management.

LibLime Academic Koha 4.8 has specific tools for authority records. O que é o Acesso Livre?

Open Access, “Acesso Livre” (ou “Acesso Aberto”) significa a disponibilização livre na Internet de cópias gratuitas, online, de artigos de revistas científicas revistos por pares (peer-reviewed), comunicações em conferências, bem como relatórios técnicos, teses e documentos de trabalho.

Existem vários mal entendidos sobre o Acesso Livre. Não é auto-publicação, nem uma forma de ultrapassar o processo de revisão pelos pares (peer-review) e publicação, nem é uma forma alternativa para publicação a baixo preço. É simplesmente uma forma de tornar os resultados de investigação acessíveis livremente online para toda a comunidade científica.

Porque é útil e desejável o Acesso Livre?

Os investigadores publicam os seus resultados (em revistas ou outros tipos de publicações científicas) para estabelecerem a sua autoria e para permitir que outros investigadores desenvolvam novas pesquisas a partir deles. No caso dos artigos de revistas científicas, apenas as instituições mais ricas têm tido capacidade para comprar uma percentagem razoável das revistas cientificas publicadas. Muitos artigos científicos não estão acessíveis a uma parte significativa dos investigadores a quem poderiam interessar.

As limitações ao acesso daqui decorrentes traduziram-se numa perda de eficiência do sistema de comunicação da ciência, e em limitações ao impacto e reconhecimento dos resultados alcançados pelos investigadores e as instituições onde trabalham.

Assim, aumentar a visibilidade e o impacto da investigação desenvolvida, através de uma maior acessibilidade com o Acesso Livre, é um interesse óbvio das universidades, das suas unidades orgânicas (centros de investigação), bem como dos docentes e investigadores individualmente.

A disponibilidade do corpus da literatura científica em Acesso Livre para todos os investigadores é também uma condição necessária para um sistema de comunicação científica que promova a eficiência e o progresso científico.

Como pode ser concretizado o Acesso Livre?

Existem duas vias paralelas e não antagónicas pelas quais o trabalho dos autores/investigadores pode ser disponibilizado num formato de Acesso Livre, sendo que ambas trazem benefícios significativos.

Uma das vias é publicar em revistas de acesso livre: revistas científicas que oferecem um nível de revisão pelos pares (peer-review), edição e publicação comparável às revistas tradicionais, mas que estão acessíveis sem necessidade de compra ou assinatura. Estas revistas científicas de acesso livre têm vindo a proliferar e pode ser obtida mais informação na Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

A outra via é o “auto-arquivo” num repositório de acesso livre: isto significa que para além da publicação dos seus artigos nas revistas científicas (“tradicionais” ou de acesso livre) os autores podem depositá-los em repositórios de disciplina (temáticos) ou institucionais (que se têm desenvolvido nas universidades). Listas abrangentes desses repositórios podem ser consultada em Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) ou Directory of Open Access Repositories (Open DOAR).

Auto-arquivar num repositório institucional ou num repositório temático é preferível à disponibilização em websites pessoais ou departamentais. Os trabalho sãos mais susceptíveis de serem armazenados e geridos de forma mais eficaz, bem como ser mais visíveis e facilmente pesquisáveis e recuperados, através de padrões de interoperabilidade e/ou com metadados descritivos de maior qualidade.

33rd IBBY International Congress will be held in London in August 2012
The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) is a non-profit organisation which represents an international network of people from all over the world who are committed to bringing books and children together.
IBBY was founded in Zurich, Switzerland in 1953. Today, it is composed of seventy-two National Sections all over the world, including newest members Haiti, Guatemala, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
As a non-governmental organization with an official status in UNESCO and UNICEF, IBBY has a policy-making role as an advocate of children's books. IBBY is committed to the principles of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by the United Nations in 1990.
With the participation of the National Sections, IBBY is involved in a number of projects: the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the IBBY Honour List, the IBBY-Asahi Reading Promotion Award, International Children’s Book Day and the Documentation Centre of Books for Young People with Disabilities.

Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) is a biennial international conference that focuses on the challenging and rapidly transforming nature of libraries and information systems and services. In recognition of today’s continually evolving online and mediated technological environment, “CHANGES” has been chosen as the theme for LIDA 2012, which is divided into two parts. The first part addresses advances in applications and practice and the second part covers research and development. LIDA 2012 brings together researchers, educators, practitioners, and developers from all over the world in a forum for personal exchanges, discussions, and learning, made memorable by being held in an enchanting and spectacularly beautiful city on the shore of the Adriatic Sea.

Libraries provide many types of value to their constituents, but measuring that value is a challenge. The IMLS LibValue project, led by Carol Tenopir, brings together a national team of academic librarians and researchers to study multiple measures for multiple services and collections in academic libraries. In this webinar, Carol will describe the LibValue academic libraries project and discuss methods for measuring outcomes and value in all types of libraries.

Ao longo dos próximos dias, o Conhecimento gerado na U.Porto vai abrir-se ainda mais a toda a comunidade. A ocasião será mais uma edição da Semana Internacional do Acesso Livre

Open Access, um evento promovido pela SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) e que visa sensibilizar toda a comunidade académica e de investigação para os benefícios do acesso livre ao conhecimento científico e divulgar os progressos ocorridos nesta área.

Para aquela que será a sua quinta participação consecutiva nesta iniciativa a U.Porto preparou um conjunto de atividades que vão dar a oportunidade para que estudantes, docentes e investigadores partilhem experiências e informação nos domínios do Acesso Livre. O programa de eventos estará em permanente atualização no site da U.Porto, plataforma que, ao longo da semana, disponibilizará vídeos com entrevistas a autores da U.Porto e também vídeos sobre o repositório da Universidade e sobre a sua política de acesso livre, entre outros conteúdos diversificados. Está ainda prevista a distribuição de T-shirts no e-Learning café (Pólo da Asprela) e outras ações de divulgação.

Participants receive a free PDF copy of the report generated from the survey; participants are listed but responses are confidential. We define cloud computing as the following: computing-related services hosted or delivered as a real time service over the internet. EMEA Regional Council Third Annual Meeting - 2012 Birmingham, United Kingdom

On 28 and 29 February 2012 OCLC's Europe, Middle East and Africa Regional Council (EMEARC) will hold its Member Meeting in the Town Hall and Council House in the city of Birmingham, UK. The title of this year's meeting, 'Developing a New Blend of Library,' has been chosen to reflect how libraries and other cultural heritage organisations are blending physical and digital 'space' to reach out to their communities with new types of service. The ACRL Spring Virtual Institute, to be offered April 18-19, 2012, will explore how libraries are capitalizing on community collaborations in order to facilitate connectedness and demonstrate value. The institute will take place in an online conference community, which will provide an environment in which groups of participants, both small and large, can gather electronically to learn, collaborate, and network. The institute will offer both synchronous and asynchronous sessions which will be archived after the institute for viewing on-demand.

NAPLE is pleased to invite you to participate in the NAPLE Sister Libraries Programme. The NAPLE Sister Libraries programme seeks to help libraries foster cooperation links in themes they are both interested in. This could also be a great opportunity for libraries serving multicultural populations whose origin is in another European country to improve their services to these communities and to help foster links with the countries of origin as well as to introduce the language, culture, etc of these groups to the local population.

The programme is open to public libraries situated in any of the participating NAPLE countries that wish to find a partner library in another country in order to establish a cooperation programme. Right now the libraries that can participate are those situated in Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain.
